Unfortunately now, to my consternation, if you block or hide someone they still show up in your "visitors" so you still get to see them viewing your profile regularly. This didn't happen before, bah.

Very interesting Dumas, never heard that but thanks for the heads-up.

Re: the reason, it has to do with the trivial process of creating a new account on a free dating site like OkCupid.  I'll leave it at that.

Yeah I just found out about it from Saucy. The second point -understood.

sfguyyy - I just wanted to clarify that the intention of the site is to not let you know that someone has blocked you, because depending on the answer to my second question - do messages not show up in your Sent folder if you are blocked or don't meet the recipient's filter settings? - you may, in fact, be able to tell you have been blocked.

I have had serious problems with both forum posts and profile edits disappearing on here, as well as posts on other forums triggering mysterious "missing security token" messages ever since I let FF "upgrayyed" itself to 3.6. And, it's been years since I believed one of those claims of free porn on a website. I s'pose I'll close FF and run the usual anti-malware programs again...

Beastlyboi: "I'm wondering if someone found a way to do this. A person who had a very high match % to me (mid-90s) used to show up all the time in my top 3 match search results and now doesn't show up at all no matter what search settings I use. I know the person still has a profile here and still has the same searchable details, but now never shows up when I do a normal match search. (I *can* find the person by searching in other ways).

So, I'm wondering if there was some way they were able to remove themselves from showing up in searches..."

I'm having the same problem. I think someone blocked me because when I try to send a message a warning comes up saying that I do not match their filter settings, but doesn't say which filter setting I don't match. I do not have the person hidden from me (still shows up on my home/activity page), and even if I customize my search criteria to find the person specifically, she does not show up on my searches - not even by reverse searching for Enemy% like which seems to work for Beastly..

What if someone is browsing anonymously, so they don't show up on Visitor lists? Will that make them also not show up on Match Search lists?

The only reasons someone will not show up in an explicit search are:

  • They don't match your search parameters
  • You've reached the maximum number of hits for a particular search
  • You've "hidden" the user
  • Something is broken with the search mechanism at the moment

OkCupid users cannot block people from viewing their profile, outside of either deleting it, or temporarily disabling it. (users cannot send/receive messages when their profile is disabled)

By process of elimination it is "Something is broken with the search mechanism at the moment"

Though by "moment," I mean: About a week..

Re: "OkCupid users cannot block people from viewing their profile,.."

N.B. The trouble is not with viewing the profile. I can see the person's profile fine. I can search for it using the Search field. I can click on it when it shows up on my home/activity page. The only thing that's screwy is when I perform a 'Local Matches' search, there is no combination of search parameters (however general or specific) that will cause this particular person to show up. The person is not hidden, inactive, or blocked by me in any way.

I've chatted with other users to help me test possibilities and no one else has trouble getting the person to show up in a search. I can narrow the search parameters to find the person specifically and all that will show up are 3 people who are very similar (age, location, etc.). There is a very noticeable gap in ordered searches ('Order by Match%' / 'Order by Last Online' / 'Distance' / etc.) where this particular user should be showing up.

It's not so important as far as my use of the site goes, but if this is a technical glitch then it could be disabling other things as well. I just think it is really odd that it is happening at all given all these explanations of how it shouldn't be able to happen, ya' know?

What if there are several other users who match me highly and I'll never know since they are just mysteriously not showing up in my searches?

Well I would just use the feedback link at the bottom of the page to report this as a possible bug, or glitch with either your profile or the profile of the target user.

Might be easiest to just link to your last comment in this thread (the "infinity" icon underneath it) so they can read the various details easier.

Just for the due diligence, when you view this profile there is not a button in the upper-right (to the left of the flag icon) labeled "Show" - right?

"Just for the due diligence, when you view this profile there is not a button in the upper-right (to the left of the flag icon) labeled "Show" - right?"

I doubled-checked that again, and no, they were not hidden. I even tried hiding and then unhiding to see if that might flip the switch fully to the on position, but no luck.

Everything makes it seem like the user in question (or someone) has done something to keep themselves from showing up on my Match searches - which is pointless because it doesn't prevent me from viewing their profile.

Are you sure there isn't some special combination of hide and block that a user could do to hide themselves in this way?

"Well I would just use the feedback link at the bottom of the page to report this as a possible bug.."

I'll try that.

Yes I'm sure.  Much to the consternation of some users here, there is no way for a person to selectively (or globally) hide their profile from other users.

 I'll try that.

Bear in mind that it's not highly likely that you'll get a response to a bug report unless they need more info.  Nonetheless it's still good to do so they can put it on a "fix list" if it isn't already.

LOL the 'reject and block' button on journal comments does absolutely nothing.

Totally retarded.

Reject and block used to work, not that long ago.  But I know there have been bugs with that, on and off.

AngryVegan

Jul 10, 2010

Well, rejecting and blocking a dozen+ comments from the same person certainly would imply it's useless.

The tests I have done suggest that the rejecting part works, but not the blocking part.

I'm going to send another bug report on it. You can do the same. (link near bottom of page)

AngryVegan, slow updating server...its not the "reject and block" button....just sign out....clear your internet cookies sign off your browser...wait 5-10 minutes..come back on to OKC..it should resolve by then..if not; its for sure the server not updating instantly like it used to.

Oh...no block? Damn...

AngryVegan

Jul 13, 2010

Instant or not working the fact that 'delete' doesn't delete anything either results in a journal entry that is targeting by retards, trolls or retarded trolls can be just utterly trashed in minutes with no way of fixing it.

It's stupid. Why should it be so damn hard to block, and DELETE someone?

sfguyyy

Jul 13, 2010

AngryVegan:

You realize that when a journal owner "rejects" or "deletes" a journal comment, it doesn't delete it from their own view, just the public view - right?

The current way that works is that if you delete a comment on your journal, it still shows up in your own view (so you can track all the comments that were made, presumably), except its its status shown underneath reads as deleted.

It's a little counter-intuitive, but once you know how that works it's not quite so nerve-wracking..

AngryVegan

Jul 14, 2010

You realize I am not illiterate or blind right?

The point is not some whiny neurotic 'nerve-wracking' BS but that a journal entry can be utterly trashed by abusive users and you just need to suffer it.

Not only can you(or in theory it takes 5-10 minutes) block 1 or more users from commenting but their detritus is left behind leaving the comments essentially unreadable by the journal owner. Great everyone else doesn't see them but meanwhile the comments are trashed for the journal owner. Why? That's just fucking stupid.
